I grew up on a family farm just outside the Quad Cities that my family homesteaded in the 1830s. Long before I understood politics, I understood work—power-washing hog buildings in the summers and waking up before school on bitterly cold winter mornings to help with chores. I also learned what uncertainty meant. The farm crisis wasn't abstract in our house; it forced my family out of hog farming and nearly cost us our land (I know many Iowans can relate).

I am a proud product of public schools, graduating in a high school class of just 88 students. I worked my way through college on scholarships, student loans, and an internship at John Deere— a path that took me to Northwestern for my MBA. Over the years, I've worn suits and safety vests. I've been on both sides of the table, as an employee and small business owner, making tough decisions and learning valuable lessons.

Five years ago, my wife Amelia and I made a choice: we moved back "home" to raise our daughters. Not because we had to—but because we believe it's the best place in America to raise a family.

I am not a politician. I've voted for both parties. I've registered with both parties. And like so many people I talk to – and nearly half of the country – I am done with both parties.
